Welcome to our special series, Family Trips Worldwide. In this series we post short facts about a cool place from various parts of the world that is great for a family trip. This time we will describe you a fantastic winter hiking trip with sledding from a panoramic mountain chain in Austria.
WHAT: a hike to a 2166 m high mountain Dobratsch in Austria where you can take a sled ride on your way down.
WHERE: Austria, near the town of Villach. 46°36’26.47″N 13°40’5.81″E
HOW TO GET THERE: in Judendorf (an area in Villach) take the Villacher Alpenstrasse (Villach alps mountain road). Continue on this road (cca. 15 min) right to the parking on 1732 m and park there. Then continue on the marked road by the hut right to the top. In witer it takes around 2 hours with kids.
WHEN: for sledding in European winter, for just go hiking all year round.
WHAT TO DO: hiking on a snowy, but well maintained mountain road. You can enjoy in really nice views already on your way up. On the top you will find a TV tower and the highest altitude church in Europe. When you finish your snacks, take your sleds and get ready for a fun descend!
TIPS: bring the sleds, because the descend is much more fun and fast on them! Waterproof hiking boots are recommended as well. The Villacher Alpenstrasse in the winter has no toll.
